Begin your journey today!

The six goswamis of Vrindavan left an invaluable legacy of knowledge of all things within vaishnava culture which has made them relevant for over 500 years. Even today, we have the unique opportunity to honor them by following their example. These saints established the seven principal temples of Vrindavan, and you can establish the same kind of temple within your own home by purchasing one of the many artfully designed altars we have for you here at New Vrindaban.

First, let’s take a look at the life of Gopa Bhatta Goswami, who lived centuries ago, but remains an inspiration within the realms of deity worship and vaishnavaetiquette.

January 14th, 2020 marked the appearance anniversary of Gopal Bhatta Goswami, one of the six goswami saints who, upon the order of Lord Caitanya, dedicated their lives to serving and telling others about the glories of Sri Sri Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan. Born in the year 1503, Gopal Bhatta first developed a strong attraction to serving Lord Caitanya as a young boy when the Lord stayed in the house of Vyenkatta Bhatta, Gopal Bhatta’s father. Lord Caitanya would stay with their family for four months during the rainy season. The Lord was taking a tour of South India and when He arrived in SriRangam, Vyenkatta Bhatta requested that Lord Caitanya stay at his house since traveling was nearly impossible at that time of year.

In a divine vision, Lord Caitanya revealed to Gopal Bhatta Goswami that He was none other than Lord Krishna himself. He told the young boy that one day Gopal Bhatta would travel to Vrindavan where he would meet the two saints Rupa and Sanatana who would explain and outline the details of his life’s service. After that moment, Gopal Bhatta served Lord Caitanya faithfully every day.

When Lord Caitanya wanted to resume His travels, Gopal Bhatta Goswami had developed such a deep attachment that he wanted to follow Lord Caitanya and fulfill the Lord’s prophecy that he would travel to Vrindavan to perform seva. Lord Caitanya, advised that the boy who was no older than seven or eight years old at the time, should stay home and serve his parents. Lord Caitanya promised that once he was older and his parents no longer needed him, Gopal Bhatta would be able to travel and do important service for the entire Vaishnava community.

Gopal Bhatta Goswami served his parents lovingly and dutifully, but the day eventually came when they passed from this world. Gopal Bhatta gathered his few belongings and journeyed from SriRangam to Vrindavan. Hearing that Gopal Bhatta had made the trek to Vrindavan and had arrived safely, Lord Caitanya was overcome with joy. He sent a few of His own belongings to Gopal Bhatta and a letter instructing him to help Rupa and Sanatana with their writings of vaishnava literature.

Taking the Lord’s words as his life and soul, Gopal Bhatta worked with Sanatana Goswami to compile the great work Hari Bhakti Vilasa, which discusses, at length, the many topics of vaishnava life, behavior, and deity worship.

Gopal Bhatta Goswami used to worship 12 shalagram-shilas which he would often wear in a cloth sack around his neck. As much as he loved his shila worship, within his heart, he yearned to worship the full deity form of Lord Krishna. One day, a rich merchant came traveling through the area and presented Gopal Bhatta with beautifully opulent cloth and ornaments for his worship. The goswami gratefully accepted the gifts on behalf of his Lord, but tearfully spoke to his shilas wishing and praying that he could lovingly dress and adorn the Lord’s fully manifested form.

Gopal Bhatta went to sleep with thoughts of devotion in his head and heart. When he awoke, he rose to perform his morning puja and to his amazement, he saw only 11 shalagram-shilas, and one beautifully formed, small deity of Lord Krishna. Stunned at the gorgeous form that the Lord had taken simply to answer his most heartfelt prayers, Gopal Bhatta began worshipping this deity as Sri Radha Ramana, whose name means, the delightful beloved of Sri Radha.

In 1542, Gopal Bhatta established the temple of Sri Radha Ramana along with its standard of worship which has become a symbol of excellence and prestige among the global community of Gaudiya Vaishnavas. This temple is considered one of the seven principal temples of Vrindavan, India along with the temples to Sri Sri Radha Madan-mohana, Sri Sri Radha Gopinath and Sri Sri Radha-Govindadev among others.

Srila Prabhupada advised that we should turn each home into a temple and an abode of spirituality. Taking his advice, we urge you to purchase an altar from our selection and keep the tradition of deity worship alive everyday within your own home.

“In one’s home or in a temple, the Deity is considered the proprietor of everything, and everyone is considered the Deity’s eternal servant.”

–SrimadBhagavatam 4.22.51, Purport.

In order to serve the Supreme Person who is the controller and owner of everything, it is an important part of our loving, devotional service to usher Him into our lives with as much opulence as we are able. We have hundreds of altars in a variety of sizes, shapes, and prices to fit both the Lord of your home and your budget so that you can give thanks to the Lord for the abundant blessings and miracles that you receive, and you can do it in the heartfelt style of the Goswamis.

If you don’t have deities at this time we encourage you to purchase an altar anyway. Make the intention to plan and pray for Krishna to bless your home and just as He manifested for Gopal Bhatta Goswami, you will see for yourself the miracles that will unfold in your life to bring Him to you!

You can find all of the details for purchasing these altars by contacting our preachers here.

We wish you and your family all the best in your blissful devotional service.

NEW VRINDABAN’S FESTIVAL OF INSPIRATION

May 8–10

Mother’s Day weekend, from May 8 to 10, 2020, marks the return of the once famous New Vrindaban Festival of Inspiration with the theme: Celebrating Vaishnava Arts. The three-day event will explore the hallmarks of Vaishnava art, theater, music, and speech and how they can enrich our lives, strengthen our communities, and assist us in spreading the wealth of the Krishna consciousness movement.

With devotees in all genres showcasing their talent and skills and presenting workshops, this is sure to be a transformative and inspirational weekend both for your creative and spiritual yearning.

Here are the highlights:

The Dramatic Arts

His Holiness Bhaktimarga Swami, known for his dramatic and spiritually enlivening theater performances, will present seminar sessions focusing on Vaishnava theater. Attendees will delve deeper into the nuances of dramatic theater and the place it holds in Vaishnava culture, following in the footsteps of great Vaishnava writers and poets like the Six Goswamis and many of Lord Chaitanya’s other prominent associates.

Lord Chaitanya would request His companions to recite their dramatic works, which were filled with spiritual rasas or emotions, giving solace to the heart and chasing away all lamentation. Because of these plays and poetic offerings, we have many important poetic verses that enrich our devotional lives today.

“I do not know how much nectar the two syllables “Krish-na” have produced. When the holy name of Krishna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert.”

–From the dramatic writings of Rupa Goswami
Sri Caitanya Caritamrta Antya 1.120

The Art of Speech

His Holiness Bhakti Charu Swami, known for his flexible understanding and inspiring realizations of Srila Prabhupada’s books and purports, will present seminars and lectures aimed at uncovering the art of speech.

The art of speech is essential within ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada was such an eloquent speaker that he was able to evoke feelings and inspire actions simply with his words, which were empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Srimad-Bhagavatam elaborates:

“A speech should be composed of selected words, very sweet to hear, and appropriate to the situation. Such speech is called meaningful. It is said, “for one who has unflinching devotional faith in the Supreme Personality of Godhead and is engaged in His service, all good qualities become manifest in his person.”

–Srimad-Bhagavatam 4.22.17

This was especially true with Srila Prabhupada, and following in his footsteps, we can practice and perfect the art of eloquent speech by studying his books, lectures, and conversations, which contain the exemplary context and mood with which to speak as a preacher and as a devotee of Sri Krishna.

The Art of Study

Two special seminar sessions will be offered on studying strategies facilitated by Prabhupada Priya Dasi, Bhakti Academy Director at Krishna House in Gainesville, Florida, and former instructor at the Sri Mayapur International School in India. Prabhupada Priya is widely praised for her ability to preach and teach with practicality.

The study of Srila Prabhupada’s books are being offered worldwide in different ISKCON faculties of learning, from elementary to advanced courses, so it is imperative that devotees are taught efficient tools to assimilate this knowledge and apply it to everyday life.

Visual Art

New Vrindaban’s beautiful Kusum Sarovara lake will become the site of a two-hour session of watercolor painting led by Krishna Bhava Dasi, a long-time resident of New Vrindaban who is expert in various areas of painting. With her guidance, and assisted by other devotees with artistic skill, we are sure that you will begin to understand the full import of Srila Prabhupada’s words when he remarked: “Please go on with this painting work with all enthusiasm. Our Krishna consciousness is so nice. By painting, your love of Krishna will become mature.”

We hope that you will leave this lesson with the ripened fruit of affection for Krishna blooming within your heart.

The Musical Arts

What would an exploration of Vaishnava arts be without music? Ananda
Vardhana Prabhu, a trained and talented singer and mrdanga player, aided by Kalakantha Prabhu and other skilled and knowledgeable devotee musicians, will facilitate classes and workshop designed to give an overview of Vaishnava music and focused training on kartalas, mrdanga, harmonium and voice. Experts, please come and help mentor beginners! This celebration of devotional music will leave you
educated, rejuvenated and re-energized.

The Art of Association

Not only do the arts focus on creativity, but it was originally aimed to inform and unify communities and villages. Through sharing the life lessons and expertise of senior devotees, we aim to unite the community of devotees and derive new ways to serve one another.

With this aim, we will also offer a seminar on sanga, how to build a community founded on strong devotee association. This enlivening seminar will be facilitated by Ananda Vrindavaneswari Dasi from Potomac, Maryland, and Kalakantha Das.

In Krishna Book, commenting on Krishna and Balarama’s stay at gurukula, Srila Prabhupada emphasized that these arts are necessary for human society.

We hope to imbibe and expand Srila Prabhupada’s ideas and vision on Vaishnava art in this year’s Festival of Inspiration, which will act as a springboard for more celebrations like these. These festivals add sweetness and joy to our spiritual practice and bring us closer to spiritual perfection in innovative ways.

We look forward to hosting you and celebrating with you this Mother’s Day Weekend.

We can’t wait to show you all that we have in store for you!

Our First Japa Ashraya Program

A group of about 17 devotees gathered within the confines of the temple during the mystical, brahma-muhurta, pre-dawn hours to inaugurate the first Japa Ashraya program. The intention to take full shelter of the holy name was taken seriously by all who attended and that mood was felt by everyone who entered into that sacred space. It was an honor and a point of pride to see how so many devotees left their distractions aside and really came to the temple room in order to fully engage themselves in the chanting of the Holy Name of Krishna.

Like the sun cresting, gently, over the horizon, the bendicting rays of the Holy Name began to seep into every heart and as the numbers swelled during the day to upwards of 50 devotees, the chanting became intense and packed with affection and emotion. Tulasi Devi offered constant protection, blessings, and guidance to all the chanters present and each dedicated individual gained support and encouragement from seeing others who sat, hour after hour in the association of the Holy Name.

Some of the stalwart community leaders of New Vrindaban like Jaya Krsna Das, one of our directors, stayed for the entire nine and a half hours, taking the opportunity to dive as deeply into the ocean of the Holy Name as possible, and showing, by their example, their commitment to serving the community through the bonding effects that chanting together can have.

After a nama-yajna like the Japa Ashraya program, it was especially nice to share realizations with all those who attended. About 20 devotees stayed through to the end of the program to share their thoughts with one another, and to gain clarity from the hours spent in prayerful contemplation and meditation. The key point felt by all who attended was that this chanting, and these types of programs have the power to seal a community with an unbreakable bond. No matter what struggles or obstacles are being faced, either past or present, when devotees come and sit with each other and chant together for four, five, six, seven, or even eight hours, something magical begins to happen. The Holy Name has such purifying, healing powers that all differences begin to fade away, and the Holy Name creates an atmosphere of love and devotion which is able to fix, solve, or overcome anything.

Once, in a room conversation, Srila Prabhupada shed light on this very point.

“Everyone is thinking, ‘Oh, there are so many problems I have to solve. I have to make this, that, this, so many.’ But he has no problem. He has no problem. His only problem is to…, how to accept Krishna. That’s all. And Krishna is so kind. He says, ‘Yes, you accept Me. Simply chant ‘Krisna,’ I am yours. That’s all.’ But my…, I am so misfortunate that I cannot chant even. All problems are solved simply by chanting “Krishna.”

Riding the wave of positivity felt by this first undertaking, and hoping to bask in the glow of even more good fortune, we hope to present these Japa Ashraya programs at least once a month irrespective of any and all challenges that may try to arise. If we do the work to simply endeavor with dedication and patience, then Krishna will do the rest to make these gatherings possible.

The next Japa Ashraya program will be held on 18th February, 2020 on the occasion of Vijaya Ekadashi with the same schedule from 3:30am-1pm. The benefits of chanting together are already high, but the benefits of coming together to perform such a nama-yajna on Ekadashi are inestimable. Please come and take full advantage of such spiritually uplifting activities.

Krishna Janmashtami – August 11 & 15th, 2020

$

Sri Krishna Janmashtami – the celebration of the transcendental birthday of Lord Krishna – is fast approaching, and we invite you to come celebrate with us at New Vrindaban.

Now more than ever, amid the global pandemic and riots, we need to invoke the blessings of Lord Krishna. When Krishna appeared in this world over 5,000 years ago, He eliminated the evil influences on the planet, and He promises to do the same for anyone who celebrates His divine appearance.

As stated in the Hari-bhakti-vilasa (Texts 283-284, 289-292) “By observing Sri Krishna Janmashtami one becomes free from the sinful reactions committed in seven lives. One gets good children, good health, and great wealth…. One will not have to fear enemies and will get sufficient rainfall and never have to suffer from drought. One will not have to fear natural calamities, hellish conditions, snakes, disease, or the attacks of rogues and thieves…”

So, let us come together to satisfy Lord Krishna on His birthday and spread auspiciousness throughout the world in these dire times!

For your safety, we will be allowing only 40 families to stay overnight on any given day of the festival, and we ask everyone to wear masks and observe social distancing while you are here. But to enable as many of you as possible to experience this great celebration, we will be holding two separate Janmashtami festivals!

Tuesday, August 11 is the actual appearance anniversary of the Lord. This most auspicious day gives you the opportunity to:

  • Enjoy enacted pastimes of Lord Krishna around the lake (the Janmashtami Journey)
  • Benefit from chanting Krishna’s holy names
  • Relish a sumptuous evening dinner
  • Witness a special midnight arati
  • Be enamored by Sri Sri Radha Vrindaban Chandra in their splendid new outfit
  • Join in the Maha-yajna (fire-sacrifice ceremony) to invoke Lord Krishna’s sublime blessings
  • Participate in a Kalash Abhisheka – bathing the deities with sacred liquids

Saturday, August 15 will also be packed with Janmashtami festivities including Kalash Abhisheka, fun children’s activities, yoga, worship of the cows, a Swan Boat festival, and a sumptuous feast for all.

Please take advantage of the many wonderful opportunities to serve Sri Krishna on His birthday!

You can sponsor the festivities:
